Clean Water for our People

We in the Western world take for granted that we can drink fresh, clean water every single day, but here in Guatemala many of our people become very sick with dysentery, diarrhea, or some form of amoebas from the dirty water.  This was brought home to me recently just how many thousands of people suffer in this way.   I have often seen people emptying their garbage directly in the rivers, and also seen dead, putrefying animals floating in there.  Hospitals at this moment are overflowing with patients dying of various diseases caused by infected water.

 By “coincidence” (or the Lord’s orchestrating) I recently came into contact with some scientists that have produced a very cheap and 99.9% effective filter for clean, purified water for drinking.  Each filter provides 22 gallons of drinking water a week, enough for a family of 5 or 6.  It allows water to be used from any source, including contaminated rivers and lakes. It lowers the probability of mortality from gastrointestinal disease, especially among children

These filters are being produced in 16 Third World countries and, even better, they have commenced a factory right on our doorsteps here in Antigua.  The Red Cross, UNICEF, Plan International, USAID, Medicos Sin Frontiers, Vision and many other ministries are now using these for their people.

The cost of these filters are extremely reasonable (approximately $37) and are changed only once a year.  We are commencing a pilot scheme in a very poor area with one of these filters that will reach 6 to 7 families.  One of the scientists has promised me that he will come and see me in January to check that everything is working perfect.

We have purchased 1 filter already and have the money to buy 4 more.  But of course there are many more families who lives can be helped by improving their health through clean drinking water.  We really believe this is worthwhile project that many of you can be involved in.  If you would like to contribute to this project then please send your donation to the address below marked “Ecofilter.”    Thank you in advance and may the Lord bless you.

                                               People Building People 2009 Visit

This month a team of 31 people (People Building People) from the USA and Mexico visited our ministry to serve the people of Ciudad Vieja (The Old City) where we minister.  The group consisted of 3 teams; A Construction Team, Medical Team and a children’s Bible School Team.  Much preparation was done before they could come (new rules for the import of medicines and drugs), and truly God helped us in getting all the medical supplies into Guatemala without paying taxes and without the correct forms!  Next year we will get it right!

A house was built for one of our church members in exactly 4 days, this was a record!  Although we are smack in the middle of the rainy season it did not rain one single day.  On the day they left the heavens opened up! God is good!  In another part of the town the medical team has set up shop in our church and were able to see over 500 patients who went home not only with medicines and vitamins, but also with a prayer, a word of comfort or hope.   Dr Hugo Mendez and his wife and son came from Mexico and they were a tremendous blessing ministering to the people here not just medically but spiritually as well.  

 Upstairs in our church our other team were handling hundreds of children with bible lessons illustrated with balloons, coloring and games, and also the star of the show – a real live clown from Texas!  Behind the mask and make-up was Ted Debonis who later took a team out onto the streets with his EvangCube (illustrated cube telling the salvation story) and obtained 305 decisions for Jesus Christ! Hallelujah!   The icing on the cake was to watch John Gadsby baptizing one of the team in the hotel swimming pool.   God is so good! 

We are grateful to God, for using John and Sue Gadsby to put this team together and bringing them to Guatemala for the third year running.   John and Sue also visit Mexico three times a year as they clearly have a big heart for God, missions and people.  My prayer has been that our Father would allow this team to come at least twice a year in future.  This prayer has now been answered as John has informed me that they will come twice in July next year!  Isn’t God good?

Sauberes Wasser für unsere Geschwister

In der westlichen Welt halten wir es für selbstverständlich, daß wir jeden Tag frisches, sauberes Wasser trinken können, aber hier in Guatemala erkranken Menschen oft an Ruhr, Durchfall oder Amöben von schmutzigem Wasser. Unlängst wurde ich auf diesen unhaltbaren Zustand aufmerksam gemacht. Und es ist wahr, oft habe ich Leute gesehen, daß Menschen ihren Müll direkt in Bäche oder Flüsse entsorgen, oder daß tote und verwesende Tierkadaver im Wasser schwimmen. Krankenhäuser haben zu jeder Zeit eine Vielzahl an Patienten, die durch verseuchtes Wasser erkranken oder an Folgeerkrankungen sterben. Durch „Zufall“ (oder des Herrn wunderbare Führung) habe ich neulich mit einigen Wissenschaftlern Kontakt geknüpft, die einen sehr billigen und 99.9% wirksamen Filter für sauberes Trinkwasser entwickelt haben. Jeder Filter bereitet etwa 85 l Trinkwasser pro Woche, egal welcher Herkunft das Wasser ist (selbst aus verschmutzten Flüssen und Seen), genug für eine 5 oder 6-köpfige Familie. Die Wahrscheinlichkeit von Erkrankungen und Todesfällen von Magen- und Darmerkrankungen, besonders unter Kindern wird damit natürlich drastisch gesenkt.

Diese Filter werden in 16 dritte Welt Ländern produziert, und was noch besser ist, eine solche Produktionsstätte befindet sich direkt hier in Antigua. Das Rote Kreuz, UNICEF, Plan International, USAID, Ärzte ohne Grenzen, Vision und viele andere Ministerien benutzen diese Filter für die Menschen, denen sie helfen.

Der Anschaffungspreis dieser Filter ist ausgesprochen günstig (etwa 30 Euros), wobei der Filterteil jährlich ausgetauscht wird und etwa 20 Euro kostet. Wir beginnen ein Pilotprojekt mit einem dieser Filter in einer armen Gegend, wo 6 – 7 Familien nun mit sauberem Trinkwasser versorgt werden. Einer der Wissenschaftler hat mir zugesagt, daß er im Januar kommen und das Projekt begutachten wird.
Wir haben bereits einen Filter gekauft und haben genug Geld, um noch 5 weitere kaufen zu können. Aber natürlich gibt es viel mehr Familien, deren Leben dadurch verbessert werden kann, daß ihre Gesundheit verbessert wird, und zwar durch sauberes Trinkwasser. Kurzmissionseinsatz 2009 von People Building People (Menschen bauen Menschen)

In diesem Monat kamen 31 Personen mit People Building People aus den USA und Mexico, um mit unserem Dienst zusammen den Menschen hier in Ciudad Vieja zu dienen. Die Gruppe teilte sich in drei Teams: ein Bauteam, ein medizinisches Team und ein Kinderarbeit Team. Die Vorbereitungen für ihr Kommen waren lang und mühsam (neue Einfuhrbestimmungen für Medikamente), und es war wirklich Gottes wunderbares Eingreifen, daß am Ende alle medizinischen Materialien steuerfrei eingeführt werden konnten und wegen der Kürze der Zeit sogar ohne die vorschriftsmäßigen Formulare! Nächstes Jahr werden wir alles genau in Ordnung haben!

Genau 4 Tage haben sie gebraucht, um ein Haus für eines unserer Gemeindemitglieder zu bauen – ein absoluter Rekord! Und obwohl wir mitten in der Regenzeit sind, hat es nicht einen Tag geregnet! Am Tag der Abreise, da hat es dann wie aus Kübeln geschüttet! Gott ist gut! Das medizinische Team benutzte die Kinderräume im Gemeindehaus und behandelte insgesamt mehr als 500 Patienten, die nicht nur mit Medizin und Vitaminen nach Hause gingen, sondern auch mit einem Gebet, einem Wort des Trostes oder der Hoffnung. Dr. Hugo Mendez, seine Frau und sein Sohn Hugo kamen aus Mexico, und sie sind ein enormer Segen im Dienst an den Menschen hier, nicht nur medizinisch, sondern auch geistlich.

Oben im Gottesdienstraum arbeitete das dritte Team mit Hunderten von Kindern: biblische Geschichten, illustriert mit Luftballons, Spiele, Malen und als absoluter Höhepunkt ein echter Clown aus Texas! Hinter Maske und Makeup steckte Ted DeBonis, der nachmittags dann mit seinem Team und EvangeCubes (bebilderter Würfel, der die Erlösungsgeschichte beschreibt) Menschen auf der Straße das Evangelium erzählte. 305 Menschen beteten das Übergabegebet! Hallelujah!

Und die Krönung war dann, daß John Gadsby eines der Teammitglieder im Swimming Pool des Hotels taufen konnte! Gott ist so gut!
Wir sind Gott so sehr dankbar dafür, daß Er John und Sue Gadsby benutzt, um dieses Team zusammenzustellen und jetzt schon das dritte Jahr in Folge hierher nach Guatemala zu bringen. John und Sue nehmen auch drei Mal im Jahr Teams nach Mexico, da sie offensichtlich ein großes Herz für Gott, Mission und Menschen haben. Mein Gebet war, daß die Gruppe in Zukunft zwei Mal im Jahr nach Guatemala kommen möge, und Gott hat mein Gebet erhört, da John bereits dabei ist, für Juli nächsten Jahres zwei Teams zusammenzustellen! Ist Gott nicht einfach gut?!

MIRACLE IN GUATEMALA

Many of the Christian churches in this country have just completed a 50-day fasting and prayer for the youth of this nation and peace and justice.  There have been some incredible moves of God during this time.  A group of teenage gangsters that terrorized Guatemala City entered a church during a service.  Whether they entered to rob the congregation we do not know, but it was not long after that they fell to their knees and ALL accepted Jesus Christ into their lives!   Later, they handed all their weapons into the local police station.   We know that God is doing great things here and prayer and fasting prepares the way.

NOAH’S ARK

Our church continues to grow as our  people are regularly going out and sharing the Good News with the lost.   As reported in our last Newsletter, we urgently need new classes for the many children and we are grateful for the generous donations towards the land next to our church building.    Although not having near enough to purchase as yet, we have decided to rent the land and have already began the task of building extra children’s classrooms.   Many of our members are giving their time to pay from their own pockets to build the classes.    We still need funds.   If you wish to help please send your donations to the address below marked Noah’s Ark. 

BIBLES

We wish to thank the two donors for their very generous gifts towards new bibles.  There need is always a need for bibles.  With these funds we are able to purchase over 100 good quality bibles.    Thank you so much.

FIESTA DE LA COSECHA

Our church works with two 6-months work cycles, and at the end of each cycle we hold a 4-days Harvest Festival to thank God for all that He did in the previous months.  Recently we celebrated the first Harvest Festival this year with different preachers and different worship teams each night.   I (Jeff) had the honor of sharing on the Friday evening.    Each night there was standing room only as they filled the place to bursting point!  Souls were saved and miracles and healings happened each evening, and, on one night we had a musical group of Mariachis who gave us a taste of Mexican Christian music.
